There is no denying that sneakers are absolutely everywhere these days. From sporty lace-ups to traditional slip-ons, they all have a serious moment in fashion.
It all started in the streets. Sneakers, that used to be irrelevant in the fashion world, became a status symbol, a significant style-culture development, a staying power. People were persuaded. They wanted to join the “club”. They begun value athleisure trend in a way fashion influencers did.
Kanye West was a key player of the sporty mania from day one. And Leandra Medine, founder of Man Repeller, instantly brought the trend into the scene challenging traditional style rules as we knew them. And so the buzz begun.
The fact that our sophisticated loafers and sky high-heels were replaced by sneakers was not necessarily easy. We learned to swear by statement six-inch pumps, to never get over suede moccasins. But it was time to make way for a new, unknown wave of trends. No one could ignore the Balenciaga Race Runners pounding the fashion capitals’ pavements. Neither the Stan Smiths. So we surrendered. To the fashion-meets-comfort era. To the casual, down-to-earth perfection.
Are sneakers here to stay? No one knows. One thing sure, seasons after the trend went viral, we still catch ourselves admiring that truly dazzling fashion-week outfit- sharp yet paired with crisp white leather sneakers.
